Childhood bladder problems are common. Symptoms may include daytime wetting, night time wetting, urinary frequency (going to the toilet too often), urinary urgency (rushing to the toilet, feeling ‘busting’), difficulties initiating or maintaining good urine flow during voiding (wee’ing), feeling of incomplete bladder emptying, urinary tract infections and pelvic/bladder pain.
Childhood bladder problems can persist into adolescence and adulthood. A wait and see approach is discouraged as this is rarely successful. Children with bladder and bowel problems have much higher rates of emotional distress and decreased quality of life when compared to their peers.
